Strawberry City Blooms Tote

This was SUCH a fun swap.  There were no requirements for what we should make, just that it be handmade, strawberry themed, and something that your partner would like (of course!)

At first I didn’t know what to do.  There are just so many options for things to make!  And then I had a problem finding strawberry fabrics that I liked (without having to buy lots of yardage).  I had some of the Heather Ross Briar Rose strawberries and some charms of other fabrics that worked with the strawberry theme, so I just decided to go with what was in my stash.

I STILL didn’t know what to make, though, until I saw one of my friends on Instagram was destashing these amazing strawberry purse handles:

I used the City Blooms Tote (free) pattern for the purse.

If I were to make this pattern again, I would use a lighter interfacing – the fusible fleece made it impossible to top stitch the top edge.  I tacked the lining down near the snaps just to hold everything in place and that seemed like enough, but I really wish I could have managed that top stitching!  I love the pleats, I love the shape, I love the fabrics, I pretty much love everything about this bag!

I also made a small wallet with a keychain loop to match the purse.  I had a little argument with the snap, but in the end it turned out super cute too.  That (also free) pattern came from Craftsy: Mini Scrap Wallet

I crocheted a couple of strawberries too and filled the bag with strawberry treats, mostly from World Market, wrapped it all up, and sent it on its way. Guess what? She loves it! 🙂

  1. I hope you’re not tired of reading my praises on this fabulous bag. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to get to be your swapee! I love everything about it – the linen, the HR prints, the pockets, and of course the handles. I thought the interfacing was perfect because the bag stays structured even when empty. All consumables are gone btw. 🙂 Thanks again!

    • How could anyone get tired of such wonderful compliments? I’m just so happy that you like it. I agonized over it for a while since everyone else seemed to be making minis an pouches…

I’m glad to hear the interfacing is holding up well. I wanted something stiff since I was concerned that the stripe wouldn’t be able to hold up against the heavier-weight linen. Still would have liked to be able to add the top stitch, though. 😉
